Official: Liverpool sign Arthur - Much-needed midfield addition arrives from Juventus

Jürgen Klopp gets a much-needed addition in central midfield. Liverpool and Juventus have agreed terms for the transfer of Arthur. The Brazilian joins on a one-year loan deal, as the English club announced on Thursday night.

Klopp recently confirmed that they are looking for reinforcements in midfield, where the Reds have to cope with the absences of Thiago and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. For Arthur, who is out of favour under Juve head coach Massimiliano Allegri, it is the third transfer to a top club since 2018. Juve were prepared for his departure and most already signed Leandro Paredes from PSG.

A €31 million transfer fee was paid for Arthur when he moved from Grêmio to FC Barcelona in 2018, before he joined Juventus for €76 million in 2020. However, the latter deal was a player swap including Miralem Pjanic to boost the clubs’ balance sheets. On paper, Arthur is therefore the fifth most expensive Brazilian in history. The market value of the defensive midfielder, who earns €5 million net per season until 2025, has dropped from €60 million to €18 million since his arrival in Italy.
